WSMF 2004 - The 2004 edition of The World Steelband Music Festival is on!
This year's  festival promises to be a very keenly competitive one with expected participation from all the seven international zones - England, Europe, North America, Caribbean, China, Japan and Trinidad and Tobago. For the first time in the history of the festival, the Grand Orchestra Finals will take place outside of Trinidad and Tobago, in London, England on the 30th, October, 2004. As in previous competitions, each zone will host its own qualifying round. Participants will compete in the Orchestra, Single Pan and Minor (Soloists, Duets, Quartets, and Ensemble) categories.
Soloists, Duets, Quartets shall perform one (1) Piece of Choice and shall be allotted a playing time not exceeding eight (8) minutes.
Ensembles (a group of not less than ten (10) nor more than fifteen (15) pannists playing steelpan instruments inclusive of rhythm) shall perform two (2) pieces at each round of the competition i.e. (a) a Test Piece - “ The Carnival is Over” by Lord Kitchener for a period not in excess of six (6) minutes and (b) a Piece of Choice - not in excess of eight (8) minutes. Total playing time shall not exceed fourteen (14) minutes.
Single Pan Bands (a group of not less than sixteen (16) nor more than twenty-five (25) pannists playing single pan instruments , inclusive of rhythm) shall perform two (2) pieces at each round of the competition i.e. (a) a Test Piece - “Symphony in ‘G’” by Lord Kitchener for a period not in excess of six (6) minutes and (b) a Piece of Choice for a period not in excess of nine (9) minutes. Total playing time shall not exceed fifteen (15) minutes.
Orchestras (a combination of pannists not less than twenty-five (25) nor more than fifty (50) performers) shall perform two (2) pieces at each round of the competition i.e. (a) a Test Piece – “Pan in ‘A’ Minor” by Lord Kitchener for a period not in excess of six (6) minutes and (b) A Piece of Choice for a period not in excess of fourteen (14) minutes. Total playing time shall not exceed twenty (20) minutes.
